Attorney General Miyares Holds American Muslims for Palestine Accountable for Refusing to Comply with Investigation

Court Previously Denied Nonprofit’s Efforts to Halt Investigation

RICHMOND, Va. – Attorney General Jason Miyares today filed a Petition to Enforce his Civil Investigative Demand (CID) issued to American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) in Richmond City Circuit Court.

The CID requested records relating to AMP’s noncompliance with the state’s charitable solicitation law and an investigation into allegations that the organization may have used raised funds for impermissible purposes, such as benefiting or providing support to terrorist organizations.

Under Virginia law, the Office of the Attorney General has the jurisdiction to investigate possible violations of the Commonwealth’s charitable solicitation law, which requires, among other things, that entities soliciting charitable contributions in Virginia register with the Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The Richmond City Circuit Court previously rejected an effort by AMP to set aside or modify the Attorney General’s CID.

Despite the court having rejected AMP’s previous lawsuit that sought to evade the Attorney General’s investigation, AMP has refused to comply with the CID requiring the Attorney General to bring this action to ensure accountability. The Attorney General’s Petition seeks AMP’s immediate compliance with the CID.

AMP is a public nonprofit with its headquarters located in Falls Church, Virginia.

The Office of the Attorney General has no further comment as this investigation remains ongoing.
