INSURANCE & UTILITIES REGULATORY SECTION

DUTIES:  This position provides litigation and administrative support to four attorneys in the Office’s Insurance and Utilities Regulatory Section.  Litigation is principally before the State Corporation Commission, with occasional work before the Supreme Court of Virginia, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and federal appellate courts.  The work includes assisting in the preparation and filing of briefs, motions, discovery, and other legal pleadings or documents, maintaining legal discovery databases, preparing and organizing documents to be used in litigation, conducting legal research, and legislative bill tracking during sessions of the Virginia General Assembly.  The paralegal will also coordinate aspects of the Section’s engagements with outside expert witnesses, including tracking expenditures related to such engagements.  Responsibilities also include working with the Section secretary to maintain files and ensure appropriate records management.  

QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate will have demonstrated litigation support experience, strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to analyze large quantities of written information, excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy, proficiency in time management, and the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work independently as part of a team.  Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel is necessary and working knowledge of case and document management systems and legal search engines is desirable. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two or more years of relevant experience.  Equivalent combination of training and experience, including completion of a paralegal education program approved by the ABA, or professional certification by the NALA or NFPA, may substitute for educational criteria.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor’s or associate degree is preferred.

SALARY:  Starting salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
