ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL (00502)

GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS & TRANSACTIONS DIVISION

TRANSPORTATION SECTION

The attorney filling this position will serve as counsel to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Right of Way Division for real estate issues in the Northern Virginia region.  This region presents complex transportation and real estate challenges and cutting edge real estate work.  Most of the work deals with right of way acquisitions, whether they be voluntary or by eminent domain. A significant portion of the attorney’s time will be devoted to reviewing, negotiating, and drafting agreements for closing real estate transactions, and reviewing and providing opinions on title reviews and eminent domain acquisitions.  The attorney will be responsible for working with a team on each project, including outside counsel, eminent domain coordinators, land surveys, and regional executives.  This position is co-located with VDOT in Fairfax (with flexibility for hybrid work) and reports to the Chief of the Transportation Section.  As with all positions, other duties as necessary or appropriate may also be assigned.  Some overnight travel may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: (i) negotiating and drafting documents for and closing general real estate transactions and related matters (sales, purchases, leases and easements with right of way matters), (ii) familiarity with title, survey, and general real estate matters, and (iii) reviewing, drafting, and advising clients regarding eminent domain matters.  Candidates should have a history of advising clients on real estate matters, with an emphasis on the ability to communicate well with all levels of understanding regarding legal issues.  Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to work well within a small team of professionals.  The qualified individual must be eligible to be admitted to the Virginia State Bar.

TO APPLY:  Please apply on-line at http://jobs.virginia.gov/.  Application materials should include a discussion of all relevant experience, résumé, a writing sample, and law school transcript (for candidates with less than 5 years practice experience).  Veterans, AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.  To ensure timely consideration, please submit application materials no later than Thursday, August 4, 2022.
