ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL (00496)

 

This attorney will provide legal services to the various State education agencies responsible for K-12 education:  the Board of Education, Department of Education, Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, and the Board of Visitors of the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind.  The attorney will be chiefly responsible for providing advice in the area of special education law, but will also advise on other K-12 issues (e.g., FERPA, teacher licensing, etc.), and matters more generally related to the administration of government (e.g., FOIA). 

 

DUTIES: This individual will report to the Chief of the Education Section, and handle a broad range of legal issues related to K-12 education, particularly special education.  Working in close coordination with a lead attorney, the individual will provide more general legal services to the assigned clients, including personnel, FOIA, FERPA, administrative process, and policy development and review.  This individual also should be able to provide training on legal issues to personnel and be prepared to appear in the appropriate state or federal court as necessary.  This individual also must be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion and work in the evening on occasion.  Occasional travel also is expected.  Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to agencies in the Education secretariat as directed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidate will have excellent analytical and writing abilities and oral communication skills, with a minimum of three years of practice.  Experience in State government practice, is preferred; and knowledge of and experience with special education law is highly preferred.  Excellent interpersonal skills are also required.  High level of organization skills, an ability to manage large numbers of projects simultaneously and to work under pressure is required.  Must be admitted to the Virginia bar or eligible for admission.  Salary commensurate with qualifications.

 

SALARY:  Salary commensurate with education and experience.
