OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL,
CIVIL LITIGATION DIVISION
FINANCIAL RECOVERY SECTION

 

DUTIES:  To contribute to the section’s mission of recovering funds or damages owed to state agencies and institutions by providing legal support primarily within the section’s general district court litigation and debt collections practice.  The position assists in prosecuting claims and collecting debts owed on a large and diverse caseload; serving as the primary point of contact for pro se debtors; and participating in every stage of the recovery process, including pre-litigation, litigation, and judgment enforcement.  Essential support tasks include identifying and locating debtors and assets; making demand for payment verbally and in writing; negotiating and monitoring payment plans; preparing legal documents, including warrants in debt, for filing in state general district courts; preparing judgment execution and enforcement documents; communicating with and responding to inquiries from client agencies, debtors, attorneys, and court personnel; and maintaining document and file control. The claims representative will attend court with attorneys for hearings and trials and provide litigation support as needed.  Some overnight travel is required.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills and analytical ability; the ability to prioritize the demands of a large caseload; considerable knowledge of legal principles, practices, and processes; and the ability to work both independently and as a team member to successfully complete complex assignments within prescribed time limits. The preferred candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience providing support in a debt collection or litigation law practice; and an undergraduate degree with major course work in paralegal studies, accounting, business, or public administration; and experience with JST Collectmax software or similar case management database software. The position supports itself and requires word processing skills. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal background check and a valid driver’s license is required.   

SALARY:  Starting salary commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications.
