STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL HERRING

~ On Gov. McAuliffe's Actions to Reduce Carbon Pollution and Address Climate Change ~

RICHMOND (May 16, 2017)-Attorney General Mark R. Herring issued the following statement on Gov. McAuliffe's executive action to reduce carbon pollution in Virginia:

"Governor McAuliffe has taken a huge step to capture the economic, health, and environmental benefits of cleaner air here in Virginia. Climate change and sea level rise aren't fantasies, hoaxes, or far-off problems we can kick to the next generation. It's a real and imminent threat to the well-being of Virginia's economy and our people. I look forward to a substantive, science-driven process to develop regulations that will further our recent progress in reducing our state's carbon footprint and developing a robust and growing clean energy economy."

Attorney General Herring recently issued an official opinion confirming that "the State Air Pollution Control Board is legally authorized to regulate GHG emissions, including establishing a statewide cap on GHG emissions for all new and existing fossil fuel electric generating plants."
