DUTIES:  This attorney, based on the campus of William & Mary, will serve as University Counsel providing representation and a variety of legal services to this complex research university under the direction of the Attorney General through the Chief of the Education Section.  The attorney serves as a key adviser to the president and executive leadership, particularly with respect to the evolving legal landscape for public higher education institutions.  This work involves a broad higher education and government practice, including, among other areas: employment law, constitutional issues, international education issues, finance and bonds, procurement and other transactional matters, civil rights law, health law, intellectual property matters and federal and state regulatory compliance.  Responsibilities also include supervision of all aspects of litigation from commencement through appeal in state and federal courts.  Additionally, the attorney will coordinate and provide leadership in all legal matters concerning the university, and will supervise the work of an Associate University Counsel and other staff members.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience, preferably including significant work in the area of higher education law or representation of Virginia governmental entities.  Excellent analytical and writing abilities and oral communication skills are required as well as the demonstrated ability to advise clients at all levels of the organization and to exercise sound judgment in efficiently managing a wide variety of legal matters, interests, and constituencies.  Supervisory or litigation experience is a plus.  Must be admitted to the Virginia bar or eligible for immediate admission. 

 

SALARY:  Starting salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
