TRANSPORTATION SECTION

 

The Transportation Section represents and advises the state agencies, offices, authorities, and boards that report or are assigned to the Secretary of Transportation. These agencies, offices, authorities, and boards include: the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB), the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Commission on the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (VASAP), the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), the Virginia Port Authority (VPA), the Virginia Port Authority Board of Commissioners, the Virginia Department of Aviation, the Virginia Aviation Board, the Motor Vehicle Dealer Board, the Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority and the Office of Transportation Public-Private Partnerships for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

 

DUTIES:  This attorney works closely with and serves as counsel to VDOT's Southeastern Right of Way Division (ROW) located in the Richmond, and the Suffolk VDOT District Headquarters.  The Tidewater region of Virginia where this position operates presents some of the biggest, most complex transportation challenges in the Commonwealth.  This position provides a wide array of legal services for VDOT and the Transportation Section.  Most of the work deals with right of way acquisitions, whether they be voluntary or by eminent domain.  The work also involves the review and approval of closing transactions and related title work.  This position reports to the Chief of the Transportation Section.  As with all positions, other duties as necessary or appropriate may also be assigned.  Some overnight travel may be required.  This position is based in the VDOT Colonial Heights District Office and will be required to work from the Suffolk District Office at least one day per week.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: (i) negotiating and drafting documents for and closing general real estate transactions and related matters (sales, purchases, leases and easements with right of way matters), (ii) familiarity with title, survey, and general real estate matters, and (iii) reviewing, drafting, and advising clients regarding eminent domain matters.  Candidates should have a history of advising clients on real estate matters, with an emphasis on the ability to communicate well with all levels of understanding regarding legal issues.  Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to work well within a small team of professionals.  The ideal candidate will have a good academic record and demonstrated relevant experience.  The qualified individual must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar.
